Foundation: technical structure

1. Set your primary domain and enforce HTTPS

In Settings → Domains, make sure your primary domain is the one you want to rank (not your myshopify.com URL), and that redirects are set up so you don't split link equity across domains.

2. Submit your sitemap to Google

Shopify generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml automatically. Go to Google Search Console → Sitemaps and submit it. If you've never done this, it's the single fastest thing on this list.

3. Check crawlability and fix redirects

Look for 404s and redirect chains. Broken product pages waste crawl budget and kill rankings. Fix them with 301 redirects to the closest live page.

4. Set your locale and market correctly

If you sell internationally, use Shopify Markets correctly so Google understands which country each page targets — and avoid duplicate content across markets.

Pages: products & collections

5. One keyword per product page

Each product should target one clear keyword. Stuffing five keywords into one page makes it rank for none. "Organic cotton t-shirt for men" is a page. "T-shirt" is not your page's job.

6. Rewrite titles and meta descriptions

Shopify's default "[Product] – [Store]" titles waste prime real estate. Write a unique title per product: keyword first, benefit second, brand last.

7. Use descriptive, keyword-rich product URLs

Change auto-generated URLs to clean slugs: /products/organic-cotton-tshirt-men instead of /products/p12345. Do this before launch — changing URLs after launch loses rankings.

8. Add alt text and descriptive image file names

Alt text is how Google understands your product images — and it's also how you appear in Google Images, a major source of free traffic for stores. Name files descriptively and fill in alt text on every image.

9. Write genuinely useful product descriptions

Don't copy the manufacturer's blurb. Write descriptions that answer real questions — size, material, use, care — and include your keyword naturally. Better descriptions also convert better.

Content: blog & pages

10. Build a collection hierarchy that makes sense

Organize collections the way shoppers search: category → subcategory. Clean, logical structure helps both Google and customers navigate — and passes link equity down to products.

11. Publish buyer-intent blog content

"Best gifts for runners" and "how to style a denim jacket" are the pages that pull in new customers who don't know your brand yet. Each article links to relevant products. This is how stores grow organically beyond their hero products.

12. Add internal links between products

"You may also like" isn't just conversion — it's SEO. Internal links help Google understand your catalog and spread authority to pages that would otherwise starve.

Speed & conversion

13. Compress images and lazy-load

Image weight is the #1 Shopify speed killer. Compress every product image and use Shopify's native lazy loading. Speed is a ranking factor and a conversion factor — it's the cheapest win on this list.

14. Remove unused apps

Every app adds scripts to your storefront. Uninstall the ones you're not actively using — you'll feel the speed difference immediately. This alone has fixed slow stores I've audited.

15. Add product schema (structured data)

Shopify includes basic product schema, but rich snippets — reviews, price, availability — make your products stand out in search results and improve click-through. Make sure reviews app output is feeding schema correctly.

Do these, then measure

Work through the checklist, resubmit your sitemap, and give it 4–6 weeks. You should see indexing improve fast and rankings follow.
